I’m your host Doug Sands, and I’m the hypnotist behind the show. In this episode, I’m detailing how weight loss hypnosis actually works, specifically how it works for so many people around the world and why it is so effective for losing weight and dealing with other issues around our health.
In episode one, we touched on the science of hypnosis in general. We’re not going to repeat that here. So if you want to learn more about what hypnosis actually is, as well as the 125 years of science that back it up, I encourage you to pause this episode and go back there. Go ahead and do that right now if you’d like, I’ll still be here when you come back. If you want to make sure you don’t miss any of the upcoming episodes that we really dived deep into hypnosis as well as talking to clients and other experts in this field, I encourage you to subscribe wherever you’re listening to this. So in this episode, we are unraveling the myths of weight loss hypnosis.
We’re also going to [00:02:00] establish the truths of what weight loss hypnosis actually is. From how it really works, to how it helps every weight loss plan. Regardless of the type of nutrition or activity, as well as how you can use it with what you’re already doing in your life. I’m also going to be explaining the virtual gastric band.
This program is a hypnosis weight loss program with a 95% success rate at helping people lose weight and keep it off. In fact, it’s been proven to have a more effective track record, than weight loss surgery. And we’re going to touch on that all in this episode. But first, if this is your first time joining us, my name is Doug Sands and I help compulsive and emotional eaters to end the obsession with food and make peace with it. Often in as little as two sessions.
This is the weight loss with hypnosis podcast and on this podcast, it’s not just about hypnosis or weight loss for that matter. It’s also about [00:03:00] all other areas of our health and our nutrition. From compulsive eating to body image issues, to even disordered eating. And if any of these issues are playing a major role in your life, I encourage you to continue listening.

Doug: First, we’re going to talk about the myths of weight loss hypnosis. In episode one, I debunked several of the myths around hypnosis in general, including the idea of hypnosis as mind control, hypnosis as witchcraft, or hypnosis as simply a placebo effect. If you miss those, I encourage you go back to episode one because we’re focusing solely on weight loss here.
So myth number one, is that weight loss hypnosis will fix me by magic. Hypnosis is not a magic wand. There is no type of hypnosis that is just [00:04:00] going to automatically fix all your problems in a single session. It simply doesn’t work that way. You can’t make a lot of great changes in a single session, but it’s not about completely changing your life in a single moment. It’s more so about creating stepping stones in a program that helps you to make those bigger changes over time. Hypnosis is very powerful for many things. And that’s because it works with the mind directly. Works with your unconscious mind, the part of you that stores your habits and your unconscious mental programs.
And the more that I’ve learned about human psychology, the more I realize that our minds and our habits, are at the root of almost all of our problems. But hypnosis is not just going to fix you over night. However, you can do a lot of heavy lifting in just one session. And it’s true, hypnosis is one of the fastest ways to make those mental changes, but there’s no magic involved in this.
It’s all about changing the thoughts, the [00:05:00] habits, the patterns, and the motivations that cause that weight gain in the first place. I often tell clients that one session can make you a healthier person, a skinnier person in your habits and your mental patterns. Then it’s simply about letting the body catch up after you change the actual issues that caused that weight gain with that unhealthy eating, whatever it may be in your life.
Once those issues are gone, the actual coping mechanism of eating and gaining weight and retaining that weight then tends to fall away on its own, which leads me to myth number two, weight loss hypnosis can make me drop hundred pounds by next weekend. While hypnosis is very quick, it’s not that quick and you wouldn’t really want it to be because that’s not healthy and it might actually put your body into shock or create other issues in your health. The average weight loss for healthy adult is about one to two pounds every week. However, that’s for someone whose already pretty close to their goal weight. If you’re doing the math, figuring out how many months or even [00:06:00] years it might take for you to finally reach that goal weight at one to two pounds a week, don’t worry. Oftentimes, clients who have significant amounts to lose, are going to lose more within those first few weeks. I often call this the biggest loser effect. On the TV show the biggest loser, people are often dropping between 20 and 30 pounds every single week.
But as they get closer to that goal weight, the numbers become smaller, but they’re still just as powerful. They still celebrate them just as hard because oftentimes they have to work just as hard to burn those smaller amounts of calories, as they get closer to their goal weight. And that should encourage you wherever you are on your weight journey.
If you’ve got a lot to lose, know that you’re going to see dramatic changes when you start. And if you’re close to your goal weight, know that it’s perfectly fine to lose only one pound a week, or even have a week where you just break even. Celebrate those wins however big or small they may seem because they are bigger than you may think.
And yes, weight [00:07:00] loss hypnosis is fast. And the virtual gastric band program, which we’re going to touch on more in just a minute, that change happens oftentimes in that very first session. Clients often report that they notice huge changes, the very next meal they eat after that session. But hypnosis is not instantaneous.
You need to give your body time to catch up. Too drastic of weight loss can actually shock your system. It’s part of the reason why those who undergo weight loss surgery, have a rocky few weeks after their procedure. Their body has to cope with all these sudden changes that have happened to them.
Hypnosis can help you lose weight very quickly, but your body is going to need time to catch up to that reality. Meaning, if you’re looking to lose weight for an event’s coming up in your future, whether it’s a high school reunion or a wedding or a conference or an awards night. It’s better to do it sooner rather than later. Give your body time to lose the weight. Don’t try to rush your weight loss in at the last minute, because that’s asking to be [00:08:00] disappointed by the results. Make sure you give yourself enough time to actually lose that weight physically, even if your mind can change very rapidly in hypnosis.
So let’s touch on myth number three, I don’t have to put any effort in. Tying in with a whole idea of the magic wand of hypnosis, many who first learned about weight loss hypnosis think they don’t have to put any effort in. The hypnotist is just going to change them and it’s just going to be effortless for them.
They think that they don’t have to do anything or commit to the program. Essentially, they want to lose weight and still eat two bowls of ice cream every night in front of the couch. And maybe they want to lose weight and never have to go to the gym or never have to walk around the block or do any exercise at all.
And it’s true, you don’t need exercise to lose weight. After so long in this field, I firmly believe that it’s our diets, our nutrition, not our exercise that truly decides our size and our health. Simply put, you cannot outrun your fork. Our bodies are built [00:09:00] to put on calories much easier than they actually release them.
And to get those changes in your life, you are going to have to make changes. Because unless something changes in your life, the results you’re getting are never going to change. You’re going to keep getting those results that you’re already dissatisfied with. And it’s just going to lead to more frustration and more pain for you.
But the good news is, change is really easy with hypnosis. The key here though, is that you’ve got to be willing to change. And this ties in with the myth of mind control that we touched on in our first episode. No hypnotist, no matter what they might want you to believe, can make you do anything that you do not want to do.
If your mind rejects change, it does not happen no matter what anyone will tell you. And here’s the key to this, you don’t have to want to eat healthy or to exercise or to change your habits directly. You simply have to want to want to do that thing. Meaning you don’t have to have the motivation to [00:10:00] do that exercise or that change yet.
You simply need to want to have that desire, that motivation. And your reason should be strong to make hypnosis very effective for you. If you’re kind of wishy-washy about this, maybe you just want to try weight loss hypnosis and see what happens, you’re not going to get as good results as when you fully commit to the change.
When someone’s reason is strong, the change is actually incredibly easy to make. Here’s some examples of strong reasons. Maybe you want to change for your kids. Maybe you’re worried they’re picking up on your bad habits and you don’t want them to suffer the same way that you are.
Maybe you’re changing because your doctor has told you, your life is physically in danger. Maybe you’re changing because your spouse is on their own weight loss journey, and you want to change with them to support them and to be that better person. On the flip side, here are some reasons that aren’t quite strong enough to make that full change in a single session.
Maybe you’re just trying out hypnosis. [00:11:00] Maybe you’re just kind of kicking the tires and seeing, what’s going to happen with this. Maybe you’re going because someone else wants you to. Maybe it’s your spouse or your parents or a relative or a friend. Maybe you just want to test hypnosis and see what it’s all about.
Maybe you’re kind of window shopping or shopping solely on price. These are all signs that you’re not really committed to making that change.
Now a note on price, because I work with weights by image and disordered eating specifically, I do charge a higher rate than generalist hypnotists. And if you’re not really committed to rapid change or not yet ready to invest in yourself, I know hypnotist who can give you a cheaper rate than I can.
I know hypnotist who will charge nothing more than $50 for a hypnosis session. On the flip side of that, I also know hypnotist who charge anywhere from 10 to $12,000 for a single session. Simply put, it’s all in the value that you’re getting. And the good news is my programs are not nearly that high. Simply put, [00:12:00] part of my rate is that because I offer such a faster result than other generalists working with these issues.
Let’s talk about the example of a dentist. Let’s say you go into one dentist office and they say they can help you with the root canal that is giving you a lot of pain right now, but it’s going to take about 10 weeks and it’s going to be about $750 per session.
Whereas you go to dentist number two, and you talk to them about what your options are and they say yeah, we can take care of that. You know, I’ve got 15 minutes and it’s going to be easy fix, like over our lunch break basically. And they say It’s going to cost you $15,000.
Now, if that pain, if that issue of that root canal is painful enough, you might just want that 15 minute solution, even if it costs way more. Now, I grew up in modest, not extravagant financial means, and I know how tight finances can be. Meaning that, I never charge more than hypnosis is worth just to make a quick buck And I know what it’s like to have to choose between the things that you want to spend your money on. So I walk a very fine line between [00:13:00] keeping these programs affordable and accessible, and keeping it enough of an investment that I’m not wasting my time, helping people who aren’t ready to actually make that change. There are too many people out there who are ready to change, who need this help today. And I can’t be wasting my time on those who aren’t ready to make even in small investments in their health. So, if you really want to make that change happen for you, you’ve got to invest in it.
Whether it’s your time, whether it’s your effort. This is not just finances we’re talking about. It’s our emotions, our commitments, our willingness to make that change. And I fully believe you can change with little to no cost at all. This podcast, with all the great tips, tools, and resources that you’re getting from it, is completely free. The at-home exercises that we talk about in some of upcoming shows, those are completely free as well. Eating healthy often costs just as much, or sometimes even less than the crappy process diet that a lot of us have been raised on. The reason that [00:14:00] clients invest in my program, is because they want help with the unconscious side of their weight loss or their journey, wherever they may be. Logically, they know exactly what they need to do to make that change, but their minds, their habits and their beliefs are working against them to actually making it. So I want to ask, what’s your reason to change, and how far are you willing to go to achieve it?
Let’s move on to myth number four, weight loss hypnosis means that I’ll never struggle with my weights again. This is a topic we absolutely need to touch on. While yes, almost all who go through a weight loss hypnosis program never deal with that issue again, there are those who face relapse. Sometimes it’s within six months or two years or even a decade.
And here’s why that ultimately happens. Weight gain is a coping mechanism, whether it’s from stress eating or overeating, compulsive eating, or it’s from our body retaining weights to protect us, essentially [00:15:00] as body armor.
Your brain is using your weights and your eating to help you in a roundabout way. Because once a brain learns a skill, it never completely forgets it. And this is really important to know about our weight and our eating issues. The brain believes that this is a valuable skill. This is helping you to perhaps avoid difficult emotions.
Maybe every time you feel stress or loneliness or boredom, you eat because that distracts us and gives us feel good chemicals in our brain. Maybe you have that extra body weight has body armor. Maybe it like some of my clients, you face trauma in your past. Maybe sexual or physical abuse and your brain is using that to put literal distance between you and anyone who might hurt you.
Even if you try to completely erase a skill that the brain thinks is important from your memory with hypnosis, some part of your brain is going to tuck it away and save it for the future, because it does not [00:16:00] know if it’s going to need that coping mechanism again. The brain is built to survive, hands down. Every time that it learns a new skill, it has new abilities to help keep you alive.
The creature that survives most often is the one with the most options. Meaning that if you have more options, you are more adaptable and you are more able to cope with a changing environment like we often find ourselves in. The brain does not like to let go of those skills, even if we try to convince it that it is perfectly fine too.
This is especially true, if that weight gain helped you. Maybe you’re thinking, helped me? What are you talking about? Yes, this is exactly what I mean. It’s a key point that I have to make again and again, with my clients. Your brain is not broken. Your brain is in fact, running perfectly. It’s simply running an imperfect program perfectly.
Think about this, how did weight gain help you in the past? Eating helps to distract us. I’m going to touch more [00:17:00] on that, including how food lights up our brain, the same way as a human hug in upcoming episodes. Extra weight gives us body armor. I often say that 25 extra pounds is like body armor, and 50 to a hundred extra pounds is kind of like a body bunker.
You are essentially putting literal distance between yourself and anyone who might hurt you. Now, this is not true for all clients, but a very helpful model. Weight puts distance between us and those who might harm us as well as putting distance between ourselves and starvation. Fat on our body means that we have extra fuel to go off of if food runs out. It also helps us to remain kind of in the background. In almost all cases, the brain has learned this weight gain habit to benefit you. And it’s not going to completely forget that no matter what a hypnotist tries to tell you. It’s simply going to put it on a back shelf or way back there in the mental storage unit, but it holds onto that kind of like a pack rat just [00:18:00] in case it might need it sometime in the future.
When someone relapses after hypnosis, it’s typically becomes something changed in their life. Maybe it was a traumatic events, maybe it was a divorce or a loss of a loved one. Maybe it was the loss of a job or a career. Maybe it was a major change in their life. Like a move from an area that you used to love.
Maybe it’s a midlife crisis. Maybe you’re questioning what your life’s purpose is. Anytime the stability of day-to-day life is shaken up and reoriented, that’s when your brain may search for coping mechanisms, to help it deal with that difficult situation.
The brain may eventually find that old solution that it had before. It’s going to pull it out and here’s why, because it worked for you in the past. Your brain hates risk. In primal times, risk could mean death. Meaning that when the brain learns a successful way to do something, it’s going to stick with it.
Doug: That’s why [00:19:00] the brain may hold onto negative coping mechanisms long after we no longer need them. Part of the mind may still feel that this is the guaranteed solution. And at times of instability and change and high stress, our brain will default to what it knows to be true, what it knows to be successful.
Now, the change that you make with hypnosis is eventually going to become that default. But this is something to be aware of when going through your program. Meaning that, it’s okay if you need a tune-up 10 years down the road. Oftentimes it’s as simple as a single session to clear up any issues, because the brain already knows what it needs to do with hypnosis.
We simply needed to convince the brain, yes, this is still a good and valuable resource. So be kind to yourself as you’re making this change. Also remember that in most cases, the change does last for life. This is especially true as that upward spiral begins to take effect. Meaning that habits [00:20:00] built on habits.
This is especially powerful when your identity starts to shift. When you start going from that person who used to be overweight, to that person who is healthy, who eats well, who takes care of their body, who loves themselves. Now, I promised that I’d also talk about virtual gastric band in this episode. The virtual gastric band is one of my primary programs that I work with in hypnosis. It’s actually the best program that I found to help people lose weight and keep it off long-term. And in fact, it’s the very program that I used to lose weights and to heal my negative relationship with food. In the virtual gastric band, you’re getting a lot more than just weight loss.
So, what is it? It’s a four week hypnosis program that helps you to reduce your overeating, and take control of your eating and your life. You’re going to meet with me, your hypnotist, for four sessions, spread out over the course of a month. It starts right off the bat with a commitment. I usually give my clients a [00:21:00] list of seven key points that I asked them to agree to.
Some people call them commandments. I simply believe it’s commitment that you’re making to yourself. I often have clients print them off and sign it and put it somewhere where they can see it day in and day out for that first month. Now this isn’t for me, I’m not going to go to their house and make sure that they actually signed this form.
This is for them. They are committing to this change and they have it in writing that they committed to making this change for themselves. Also, I asked clients to buy a new piece of clothing that they want to fit into after their weight loss. I encouraged them to buy something that looks good, something they actually want to wear to help motivate them and I encourage them to hang it somewhere where they will see it everyday. It doesn’t have to be very expensive. It can be a new skirt or something from the thrift store that you thought was really cute, but you can’t quite fit into yet. It also doesn’t have to be clothing in fact. A fellow hypnotist that works with this program had a client who bought running shoes as their item.
This client had not run [00:22:00] in years, but that’s what weight loss meant to him. It meant that he would be able to do that thing that he used to love and get back in shape. It’s simply a reminder of the person you are going to be after this program. Sometimes people ask if they can reuse an old piece of clothing, maybe the jeans they wore in high school or before their first child. The idea behind it is great, but there are a lot of emotions and mental programs tied up in that, that create a lot of issues when making this change. So I encourage clients to start fresh, start with a completely clean slate. So what happens in the program? The first session is all about installing the virtual gastric band. This session is very powerful. And in fact, it’s probably the most important session in this entire program.
People who go through this first session often notice a difference the very next time they sit down to eat. The first session in this program is all about increasing full signals. It’s helping you to make stopping, [00:23:00] when you’ve had enough automatic. It’s helping you to push away excess food when you no longer need it, even if you’ve been programmed to eat everything on your plates. I get it, I grew up in a Midwestern household without any extra food just laying around. And for many years I felt lack. I felt like we did not have enough. And so unconsciously, part of me worried that we were going to starve and that stuck with me long after the actual financial risk was no longer there.
And we’ll touch on the psychological piece more in upcoming episodes. There are a lot of psychological issues that come along with losing weight. And I don’t mean psychological issues like mental illness, like anxiety or depression. I simply mean mental programs that are still running that we no longer need in our life.
So after that first session, you’re going to get a 15 minute hypnosis audio to take home with you. I encourage clients to listen to this at least once a day, for the first 30 days. This hypnosis builds on the changes you’ve [00:24:00] already made in that first session.
It helps to create new habits in the very environment where you’re facing that struggle. Clients often listened to this before their biggest meal of the day, because it helps reinforce it that this is the change that we have made, and we no longer need to keep eating when we’re no longer hungry. Some clients like to listen to it before every meal. It’s simply helps keep you on track for those first 30 days as you are building in this new lifestyle.
Session number two is all about releasing things that are holding you back. Things like your habits. Maybe you have habits of eating in front of the television and eating unconsciously. Maybe you have habits of eating when you come home, even though you’re not exactly full, you’re simply trying to bridge the gap between your workday and your home day.
Maybe you have certain beliefs that are limiting your success in your weight journey. Maybe you believe that you can’t actually lose weight. That other people can, but you’re going to struggle with it for the rest of your life. Maybe you have [00:25:00] roadblocks in your way. Maybe your family isn’t on board with your weight loss.
Maybe you personally aren’t sure whether you should lose weight. Maybe you will be seen differently and work in your relationships in your life as well. And so there are a lot of things that might impact your weight journey.
And session two is all about helping you release the ones that are no longer serving you. This is a very powerful session as well and this is often where the results that we started getting in the first session are turbo-charged. Often, clients see those results in the first session, but once the weight of these limiting beliefs are gone, that’s when they really start to take off and see massive success. Often, this is about more than just weight loss. There are many different areas of my clients lives that changed because of this simple program. Clients often report that emotional struggles they’ve been facing for years just kind of fade away. That’s because when we’re releasing things in this session, it’s not just about releasing things directly tied to weight loss. It’s about releasing things that are [00:26:00] holding you back in general. And when you release those things, all of the issues that are built on top of that tend to crumble away.
I often say that problems hold hands with other problems. Meaning that as you change issues around your weight or your health or your eating, you may change the negative beliefs about yourself. You may release resentments that you’ve been holding onto often unconsciously sometimes for decades. You may finally forgive that younger version of you for what they couldn’t prevent or what they did wrong in the past.
There are so many different areas that benefit when we actually release those things that no longer serve us. And that’s why this session is personally one of my favorites in the virtual gastric band program. This session is very powerful and the changes impact far more than just your weight.
So let’s look at session number three, this is all about building momentum.
It’s all about building motivation to eat well and get exercise, however much you actually want to exercise. Remember, I don’t personally believe that you need to [00:27:00] exercise to lose weight, but I do believe it’s a helpful part of any health and wellness routine.
Session number three is all about helping you enjoy the process. It’s about helping you identify as that healthier person. And the important thing about identifying with that healthier version of you is that when you identify as that healthier version, your thoughts, your beliefs, your habits, your patterns, all start to align with that identity.
And I don’t mean that align in a woo woo sense. I mean that literally, your mind starts to think what would a healthy version of me too? And it’ll say, oh, a healthy version would probably eat some brocolli to go as a side dish on this. Or a healthy person would go to the gym instead of hitting that snooze button. So the more you build up that identity, the more your brain and your body are going to align up with what you actually believe.
The brain really does not like cognitive dissonance. Meaning that, if your identity is someone who is healthy, but your habits are as someone who is not quite there yet, either your brain is going to change [00:28:00] your habits or it’s going to change your identity to fit.
The good news is that once you change your identity, it’s actually much easier to change your behaviors than your identity itself. Your identity is much more resilient than your day to day behaviors. And that’s why change your identity in session number three is one of the most powerful steps in the virtual gastric band program.
Session number four is essentially about streamlining the process. It’s about wrapping up loose ends and clearing away any final blocks that you might have slowing you down or creating some issues in your life. This is also about helping these changes to last for life. In my own journey, even though I’ve lost the weight that I wanted to lose, I still see the effects of the virtual gastric band. I still notice those full signals when I’ve had enough. And I noticed when I try to overeat and my body says, we don’t really need this, it’s still working for me. And it’s still going to work for you long after you’ve reached your goal weight.
The virtual gastric band [00:29:00] is really one of the most powerful hypnosis programs that I use with my clients. The reason that I go into such detail about this program is because it is a worldwide sensation. The virtual gastric band was created in the United Kingdom, and it underwent two initial studies. It underwent the initial launch study by the creator, Sheila Granger, and a practitioner in the United Kingdom wanted to test the results and see if he could replicate them. Both of these studies found a 95% success rate at helping people lose weight and keep it off.
And in fact, that is more than weight loss surgery. A recent study found that nearly 50% of weight loss surgery patients will gain back all or more of the weight than what they started with in just two years time. That’s two years. That’s not a lot of time. That’s essentially a 50/50 shot at you might actually get this right or it might fail completely. Those are terrible odds, especially when this is [00:30:00] such a big investment in your life. Weight loss surgery often costs between 14,000 and 31,000 dollars in the US. And I mentioned that because I know we have listeners tuning in worldwide. And for many of those listeners, that cost is even higher.
The virtual gastric band program is significantly less expensive and often significantly more powerful at helping you make those changes. So with all of those myths debunked and with a little more knowledge on what actually happens in weight loss hypnosis, it’s time for the empowering metaphor. If you’ve never heard an empowering metaphor, all you need to do is simply sit back and let it wash over you.
These metaphors are constructed to help your unconscious to gather a new solution or a new tool to use in whatever you’re dealing with in your life. There’s no need to analyze them. In fact, they’re actually more effective if you just kind of let them happen. You may notice as well, that many metaphors tend to [00:31:00] sound like children’s fables.
And there’s a specific reason for this. Our brains are built to learn best via storytelling. Also, fables are one of the oldest ways to teach powerful lessons. While our conscious mind is caught up in the story, our unconscious is listening to the moral message of this story and what it actually means for our life. So this empowering metaphor is the story of The King And The Quilt Maker.
This is a story that my grandmother used to read to me when I would go to visit her in Southern Minnesota. We would sit on the couch and she would pull up the book, The King And The Quilt Maker. And she would read it to me and I’d stare the pictures even before I could read, because I was fascinated by all the bright colors, but the story of The King And The Quilt Maker goes like this.
There once was a king in a faraway land who had everything that he wanted. He had gifts from every corner of the earth. he constantly invited his subjects and his people to bring him new and exciting [00:32:00] gifts, but they never quite satisfied him. And so the king learned one day that there was a quilt maker in a town far in the mountains, very great distance from his castle. And this quilt maker, supposedly made the finest quilts in all the land. Quilts, so soft that they were like clouds. Quilts so warm that they kept you warm even on the blustery wintery nights of that castle. Quilts so filled with love that they helped heal people from emotional wounds.
And immediately the king resolved, I want one of these quilts. And so he took a Royal retinue all the way up into the mountains and demanded the quilt maker, make him a quilt. And the quilt maker, an old woman who didn’t want any of his gold, or wasn’t threatened by his guards or his threats of imprisonment, she simply shrugged her shoulders and said, I’m not going to make you a quilt. The king flew into a rage, he was furious at this quilt maker and after days and days and weeks and [00:33:00] weeks of pestering, the king finally got the quilt maker to make a concession and say she would make him a quilt, but she added only if you give away all of the possessions that you gained.
The king went away, furious and marched back to his castle and for months stewed on this. But as he looked over his rooms and rooms of bountiful, possessions that he’d taken from all of his people, he realized that it wasn’t actually making him happy. And so slowly at first, he started to give away possessions to people he knew, and then he realized how good it felt.
He started giving away to people in his kingdom, people who had given him the gifts and who really couldn’t afford to have given him in the first place.
